America buys millions of small crossovers per year, and with Ford ditching cars for these things it takes on even more weight, figuratively. ![]() This is the fourth generation of Escape, and Ford made a huge deal of it at a launch event in April of this year at Detroit’s Greenfield Village museum. Crazily, that pricing is right in line with premium trims of the Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V, the two leaders in this class. However, I drove a few topped-out Titanium models that were right near $40K. That’s not a bad place to be for a $25,000-ish vehicle. The whole package looks a cross between the early Mazda CX-9s and later Porsche Macans. I said this at the launch event but look for this style on Fords going forward. In the rear the hatchback takes on more horizontal styling with wider taillights and new Escape script stretching in between. The fog lights are sleeker, and the headlights are oval, and expensive looking. The three-bar grille was replaced with a sporty, honeycomb-like fascia. And with this major redesign, Ford’s compact crossover moves solidly into the latter camp. In the lineup of two dozen or so competitors to the new-from-the-ground-up 2020 Ford Escape there are some dogs. If you walk out to your car everyday and it looks like a baboon ass, it’s not going to make you happy no matter how many miles per gallon you get. But I’m going to wedge another reason in there, probably at or near the top. These are the things people say they look for when buying a new car. Technology, safety, reliability, efficiency. ![]()
